The dockyard is an example of Ottoman Empire’s apogee. It was the biggest dockyard or
maritime arsenal of the world with its 300 ship construction part in the reign of Suleyman the
Magnificent, the Turkish Navy which made the Mediterranean Sea a Turkish lake, was
constructed in this dockyard. The maritime arsenal, was used for five centuries. In
Taskizak Dockyard, first floating pool, and first steaming ship were constructed in 1827,
in 1886 first two submarines named as Abdülhamid and Abdülmecid
were build.
After the World War I, Istanbul was occupied by the allies and Taskizak Dockyard
was closed. Benches and machines were transferred to Golcuk and a new dockyard was built
there.
Following the agreement about straits in 1941, Taskizak Dockyard activated again
with less engineers and workers and used as a pool and for repairing purposes, also little
tonnage ships were constructed.
fter 1960, it was developed faster and today it is still used by the Turkish Navy. |
