The ISLAND of SAKIZ (GUM)

The Greek Island located on the eastern part of the Aegean Sea. The island is disconnected from Cesme (Izmir) with the Sakiz Strait. The name is coming from the famous gum trees growing in the island.

Sakiz had been attacked by the Turks settled on the west coasts of Anatolia, during the Byzantine Age, later the island was invaded by the Ottomans, pirates, and the Geneoise. In the reign of Suleyman the Magnificent, Piyale Pasha captured the island in 1566, and in 1694 the Venetians taken it. In 1695, Turks recaptured Sakiz but in 1912 it was given to Greece.
