The Cathedral, had began to be constructed in 1209, could not had been completed because of a variety of invasions of different races and it was converted to a mosque in 1571 by the Ottomans. It is the oldest and the biggest mosque of Cyprus. In 1954, on the memory of Sultan Selim II the name of the mosque had been changed as during the conquest of Cyprus he was the Sultan.
