CEBELI TARIK (GIBRALTAR) STRAIT

It is a strait that unites the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, it has 69-km length and 44 km width. It is a deep strait ant the shallowest part is 324 m. There is a strong flow from west to east in front of the strait. Two side of the strait is steep and rocky.

Its name was Calpe in ancient times. Today it is called by the name of an Arabic general, Tarik. Tarik had made a castle to provide the safety of the strait. Cebeli Tarik was captured by Spain in 1462, in 1502 it was formerly added to the Spanish land. It was captured by the navy of England-Holland in 24th July, 1704. In 1705 with Ultrecht agreement, Spain has accepted giving the strait to England.
