The history of Amasya
goes back until 4000 BC. According to the Greek historian Strabon, who was from Amasya,
the city had taken the name Ameseia because of being founded by Amazon Amasis.
The city that had been under the
sovereignty of Hittites and Assyrians. Later it was invaded by The Pontus Kingdom and made
the capital in the 3rd century (BC).
Amasya had a historical importance by
being the capital of Pontus Kingdom Mithradates I had made the city capital and Amasya had
been the capital of the Kingdom for two centuries. The city had gone under the sovereignty
of Romans, Danishmetians, Mongolians, Ilhanians and Ottomans afterwards. Today, it is one
of the important cities of Turkey.
The city is near Tokat River that is
known as the main arm of Yesilirmak River, and it is 400 meters high from the sea. The
aqueducts that legendary hero Ferhat brought water to the city were built here. According
to the legend The Ferhat Aqueducts were made by Ferhat for his love Sirin.
Amasya’s area is 5520 km2 and its
administrative districts are; Goynucek, Gumushacikoy, Merzifon, Suluova (Suluca), Tasova
(Yenisenbuku). The most important stream of the city is Yesilirmak River. |
