Sheikhulislam Yahya Efendi was born in
1561. He was the son of Murad III’s sheikhulislam Zekeriya Efendi. He was educated by
his father and attended the lectures of Abdulcebbarzade Mehmed Efendi. He worked as a
scholar in different schools. He was designated as a judge and worked in Halep, Sam,
Egypt, Edirne and Istanbul (1604). He was appointed as the Chief Judge of Anatolia and
Roumelia (1605) but he was dismissed, in 1606. He replaced sheikhulislam Esat Efendi who
resigned after the murder of Young Osman (1622). He was dismissed because of a discord
with grand vizier Kemankes Ali Pasha (1623). His rank was given back later (1625-1632,
1634). He joined to Revan and Baghdad Campaigns of Sultan Murad IV. |
