Tokoli Imre was born in Kesmark in
1657. He was the chief of Hungarian Protestants in Austria. The Protestants led by Tokoli
Imre revolted against the Austrian Emperor who forced them to convert their religions to
Catholicism. Tokoli, demanded protection from grand vizier Koprulu Fazil Ahmed Pasha but
he was refused as the Ottoman government did not want to break the relationship with
Austria.
Tokoli Imre invaded central Hungary. But, his
supporters left him one by one and he repeated his demand to Kara Mustafa Pasha, in 1681
by sending him gifts. The Ottoman government declared Tokoli Imre as the King of Central
Hungary. He conquered many castles in Austria with Turkish support. After the Ottomans
defeated in the 2nd Vienna Besiege, Tokoli was lost the castles he dominated
and he surrendered, in 1688 and he was brought to Vienna.
After he was freed he joined to the Ottoman army. He
went into Transilvania as the commander of the Ottoman and Tartar forces, and defeated the
German Army. After that success he was declared the Prince of Transilvania. He receded to
Izmit after the defeat of Zenta. Tokoli Imre died in Izmit in 1705. |
