SADEDDIN AREL

He was born in Istanbul, in 1880. He was the son of the Judge of Anatolia Mehmed Emin Efendi. Sadeddin Arel was also the brother of the Minister of Justice Ali Haydar Arsebuk. He graduated from the Academy of Law. He worked in different government offices.

Sadeddin Arel resigned from his duty following the abolishment of “surayi devlet”. He had spoken Arabic, Persian, French, English and German. He also could read and write some other languages. He began to learn and perform music in his 10th year. He played many musical instruments. Between 1907-1909, he studied Western music with Edgar Manas. He met with all the masters of his time. He studied Turkish music. The theory of Turkish music had appeared. He tried adapt polyphony into Turkish music. Sadeddin Arel could not have reach the level of the great composers but he is considered as one of the important Turkish composers. He mostly composed religious instrumental musics. He died in Istanbul, in 1955. His library had been given to the Istanbul University after his death.
