RAUF HUSEYIN ORBAY

Rauf Orbay was born in Istanbul, in 1881. When he passed to Anatolia in order to join the National Independence War, he was a famous national hero. He finished the Naval Academy. Because of his successful sea wars during the Balkan Wars and gained the title of “Hamidiye Hero”. He was the Minister of the Marine in the government of Izzet Pasha. Beside all his successes, he had to sign Mondros treaty which was the dissolution document of the Ottoman Empire. In 1921, he returned from Malta exile and went to Ankara and he was appointed as the Minister of Public Works. Later, he was elected as the second president of the National Grand Assembly. Between 1922-23 he was the prime minister for few months in. In 1924, Terakkiperver Cumhuriyet Firka (Progressive Republican Party) was founded and Rauf Orbay had continued his opposing policies under the roof of this party. He was appointed as the London Ambassador in 1942-1944. He died in 1964.
