PETER I OF RUSSIA (CRAZY PETER)

He was born in 1672 in Moscow and he died in 1725 in St. Petersburg. He tried to make Russia an European country. Primarily, he established an army and a navy. He went to England twice in order to learn the construction of the English ships. He commissioned engineers and he established the first Russian Navy on the Don and Voronej Rivers.

To poses the Black Sea Peter attacked the Ottoman Castle Azak in 1696 and captured it. In 1709, he defeated Charles XII, in Poltova, and, Charles took refugee to the Ottoman Empire. Although, Peter wanted the Sweden King to be given to him; the Ottomans rejected this, and held the king for five years until he returned to his country. For this reason, Peter attacked to the Ottomans, Ottoman forces commanded by Baltaci Mehmed Pasha were almost defeated him, in 1711. If Baltaci Mehmed Pasha acted more resolutely, he could have defeated Peter. Peter, recaptured the Castle of Azak. It is thought that Baltaci Mehmed Pasha, affected by Queen Katherina and accepted to sign a peace treaty with Russia.

Peter died when he was 53 years old. He was a king deserved his nickname “crazy”. Because of his injustice, violence and tyranny the old historians named him as “Crazy Peter”.
