Nef'i was born in Hasankale, in 1572. He was the son of Mehmed Bey who came from a family from Sirvan. Nef’i had an Islamic education. Appropriate to the literature tradition of the time he learned Arabic and Persian literatures. Especially, he researched old Persian poets Sadi and Hafiz. He came to Istanbul in the reign of Sultan Ahmed I. He impressed the literary circles in a short time. Especially, he was supported by Sultan Ahmed I and Sultan Murad IV. He worked in Istanbul and in Edirne. One day, while Sultan Murad IV was reading the poetry of Nef'i, a thunderbolt was fell and he exiled Nef’i to to Edirne. He was appointed as the Muradiye Trustee. Then he was forgiven and returned to Istanbul. After some time, he got strangled and thrown to the sea in 1635 by the command of Bayram Pasha whom he satirised. He wrote many poem in various forms, he is usually known with his lyrical poetry.
