Mevlana was born in Horasan, in 1207. Mevlana was the
most important Islam poet and the founder of the Mevlevi Sect. His father
was Mehmed Bahaeddin Veled who was usually known as Sultan-ul Ulema (Sultan
of the Islam Scholars). His roots go back to the first caliph Ebubekir. Mevlana went to
Hicaz, Sam, and then to Malatya and Erzincan with his father. Finally, he settled in Konya
and he was protected by Seljuk Sultan Alauddin. His father became the most famous scholar
in Konya. After his death in 1231, Mevlana replaced him. Although he was very young, he
had a reputation with deep knowledge of theology. He followed the teachings of Sufi Seyyid
Burhaneddin, later he formed his own sect called as “Mevlevilik”. He wrote his most
important book Mesnevi in the admiration of sufism. Mevlana was poet of
feeling more than ideas. There are tales, anecdotes, and arguments about sufism in his Mesnevi.
Also it includes lyric poems which Suleyman Nahifi translated them from Persian to
Turkish. Mevlana died in 1273, in Konya where he was buried. |
