Mustafa Efendi was born in Salonica. He worked in different
government offices. He became the clerk of the Silahdar (Guardian of the Sultan’s
weapons) in 1587. He joined the Gence War and at the end of the war he was appointed as
the clerk of the Cavalry Corps. He was dismissed from this duty after he returned to
Istanbul (1589). He was given the duty to account the expenses of the palace planned to be
build for the Safavi Ambassadors (1590). Grand vizier Ferhad Pasha appointed him as the
Accountant of Anatolia. Mustafa Efendi lost this duty, after Ferhad Pasha was dismissed.
He was appointed as the translator of the Gilan sovereign Khan Ahmed who had been taken
refugee in 1593. Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha appointed him to important governmental
duties. Mustafa Efendi wrote a detailed chronicle called Tarih-i Selaniki (Salonica History). In
this work he reveals the events between 1563-1600 and gives information on palace
ceremonies, dismissing, economical problems, revolt of the Kapikulu Soldiers. He died in
Istanbul, in 1600. |
