She was born in 1590 and she was one of the most
notorious and significant women of the Ottoman history. She was the wife of Sultan Ahmed I
and mother of Sultan Murad IV. Bosnia Governor had sent her to the sultan. When she was 15
years old, she became the first wife(haseki) of Sultan Ahmed I, her talents, cleverness
and beauty had impressed the sultan and she became the most influential person of the
palace. She became a widow when she was very young. The successors of Sultan Ahmed;
Mustafa I and Osman II had sent her to the old palace as she was highly intervening the
state affairs. However, she returned to the palace as the mother sultana with the
enthronement of her son, Murad IV. As Murad IV was a very young sultan, she took the
authority in her hands. Sultan Murad IV grew up and he put an end to her sovereignty.
Unfortunately, Murad’s unexpected death ascended her to the scene again. During the
sultanate of his grandson Sultan Mehmed IV she had continued to administrate the state but
her daughter in law Turhan Sultana had had strangled her one night (1651). |
