Koprulu Fazil Mustafa Pasha was born in Istanbul, in
1637. He is the second son of Koprulu Mehmed Pasha, and brother of Fazil Ahmed Pasha. He
was appointed as the grand vizier during the Second Vienna Siege and with the precautions
he took, he saved the empire from collapsing. He served the empire for 2 years in the
reigns of Sultan Suleyman II and Sultan Achmed III. He was a well educated person like his
elder brother and he was a wise and a foreseeing statesman. He became a scholar in the
university, and he was appointed to Silistre as the governor. In 1680 he went to Babadagi
as the commander. He played an important role in dethroning of Sultan Mehmed IV and after
that event he was appointed to Kandiye and Sakiz guardianship. He was appointed as the
Grand Vizier in 1689. He started his career by repressing the revolts in the country and
removed the high taxes. He reorganised the army by reducing the number of soldiers. He
recaptured Nis, Budapest, and Belgrade and he was killed in the battle field in 1691. |
