Korkut Chelebi was
born in Amasya, in 1470. His father was Sultan Bayazid II. He was the elder brother of
Sultan Selim I. He was educated in the palace during his grandfather Sultan Mehmed the
Conqueror’s period. He learned Arabic and Persian. After the death of Sultan Mehmed the
Conqueror in 3rd May 1481, he represented his father until he arrived Istanbul.
He was appointed to Saruhan in 30th December 1483. He sent soldiers against the
Christian Navy that besieged the Island of Midilli, in October 1501. He was sent to
Antalya as the governor. In April 1509, he went to Alexandria from Antalya to go to
Pilgrimage. The Mameluke Sultan welcomed him very friendly. He stayed in Egypt more than
one year.
Korkut Chelebi went to Manisa, which is a closer city to Istanbul,
during the chaos that the Selim (Sultan Selim I) created by entering to Crimea from
Trabzon, in 1511. Korkut went to Istanbul during the throne struggle between Selim and
Ahmed. Korkut asked assistance of the Yeniceri Corps in for his enthronement. But the
yeniceris favoured Selim. Sultan Bayezid II left his throne to Selim. After this event,
Korkut Chelebi had accepted his brother’s sovereignty.
Korkut Chelebi returned to Manisa. He had corresponded with the
statesman favouring his sultanate. Hence, Sultan Selim went to Manisa, in 1513. Korkut
Chelebi wanted to escape but he was caught around Bergama and was brought to Bursa, where
he was killed.
Korkut Chelebi tried to improve the naval forces in the Agean and the
Mediterranean Seas as a governor. He took some sailors including Hizir Reis (Barbaros)
family under his protection. At the same time he was interested in science and music. He
wrote poems with pseudonym of “Harimi”.
