Jan Zapolya was born in Slovakya, in 1487.
He came from a noble Hungarian family. He made leadership of Racos Assembly decided not to
select a prince, who was not pureblooded Hungarian as the King, in 1505. Jan Zapolya was
the candidate of king among nobles. He was brought in the place of Transilvania Voyvoda,
in 1511. In 1514, he bloodily repressed the peasants’ rebellion against nobles. The
Hungary War of Sultan Suleyman The Lawgiver resulted in Mohaç Triumph, in 1526. Jan
Zapolya was selected as Hungarian King by a few Hungarian nobles in 1526. But the opposing
nobles selected Archduke of Austria, Ferdinand as the king. This resulted in an internal
war for two years. Jan Zapolya was beaten by Ferdinand and he asked for help to Ottoman.
The position of Zapolya got stronger by the entrance of Sultan Suleyman The Lawgiver to
Hungary again. Hungary Land was shared between Jan Zapolya and Ferdinand in 1533. Jan
Zapolya violated the agreement done in 1538, left his son Sigismund to his place and died
in Transilvania, in 1540. |
