FEYZULLAH EFENDI

Seyyid Feyzullah Efendi was born in Erzurum, in 1639. His real name was Mehmed, and he was the son of Muftu (provincial director of religious affairs) of Erzurum Seyyid Mehmed Efendi. He took his first education from his father. Later, his cousin Ýsmail Efendi thought him Arabic, Persian and he studied Muslim jurisprudence with Seyyid Abdülmü’min. He attended the lectures of Sheyh Mehmed Vani Efendi the famous scholar of the Erzurum region. Mehmed Vani Efendi sent Feyzullah Efendi to Istanbul in 1664, and then he went to Edirne where the Sultan had settled. In 1672, Feyzullah Efendi made a pilgrimage to Mecca. After he returned to Istanbul, he became the teacher of Sultan Mehmed IV’s son Sehzade Mustafa. As his reputation had increased, he was appointed to famous schools of Istanbul as a scholar. In 1674, he was designated to Sultan Ahmed Medrese (school). In 1678, he was designated as the teacher of Sehzade Ahmed with the rank of Roumelia kazasker (Chief Military Judge). Sultan Mehmed IV dismissed him from this duty but, after a few days his rank was given back. In 14th February 1688, he became Seyhulislam (Minister of Islamic Issues). However, he could have continued this duty for only seventeen days, and he was dismissed, because of military confusions. The Yeniceris sent Feyzullah Ffendi to Erzurum and he lived there for seven years. When his student Sehzade Mustafa ascended the throne, he invited Feyzullah Efendi to Edirne and appointed him as the Seyhulislam. Feyzullah Efendi for eight years continued to be the seyhulislam. For the first time in the Ottoman history Sultan Mustafa gave a firman that; Feyzullah Efendi would have been the Seyhulislam after the Sultan’s death. With this firman Feyzullah Efendi took negative reaction. He increased his influence in the palace with many intrigues and indecent activities. A revolt had raised against him in Edirne and was executed, this revolt is called as the Edirne Event.
