Evliya Celebi was born in 1611, in Istanbul.
He was son of an engraver. His father had important services in Sultan Suleyman I’s
campaign of Zigetvar. As Evliya Celebi listened his father’s adventures,
from his friends, he decided to explore all the world. When he was 20 years old, he had
toured all Istanbul and wrote what his observations.
He began to work in Enderun (women’s
quarters of the palace) and was educated there for four years, and became a cavalry
soldier (sipahi). After, Sultan Murad IV’s, Revan
Campaign, Evliya Celebi came to the palace. He lived in the palace, until his
first trip to Bursa. After Bursa, he went to Izmit, Trabzon, and Kyrete. For 50 years he
travelled many countries; like, Austria, Hedjaz, Egypt, Sudan, Abyssinia, Daghestan. In
the places he went, he took duties, he served as a messenger, he fought in the wars. He
wrote a detailed travel book, called Seyahatname. It is the first and the
greatest travel book of the Turkish literature. The places and the events are written very
realistically in vernacular language. |
