Ebussuud Efendi was a very significant Islam Scholar and the
sheikulislam of Sultan Suleyman the Lawgiver and Sultan Selim II. He was born in a village
near Istanbul. His father was a famous Islam sheikh. He took his first education from his
father and later attended the lessons of important Islam scholars. In 1548, he was
appointed as the Sheikulislam the rank which he carried for 27 years. He had been the
sheikulislam of Sultan Suleyman for 22 years and more than 5 years of Sultan Selim. He
died in his 84th year and buried in the garden of the school he had had built,
in Eyup. He became a very famous name that even the people of Mecca and Madina had prayed
for him after his death. He wrote poetry in Turkish and Arabic. |
