Charles the Ironhead was born in 1682. Because of his bravery and military successes, the yeniceris and the historians named him as “Ironhead”. He succeeded his father Charles XI of Sweden, in 1697. He declared war against Denmark, because of the treaty between Denmark, Russia, and Poland. He won a victory. Then he attacked Russia and Poland. In the beginning, he was successful against Russian Char Crazy Peter. When he advanced through Moscow, his army was badly effected by the winter and the epidemics, and, he lost the war in Putlava. After this defeat he took refuge to Bender in Ottoman control. He lived in the Ottoman lands for five years, and provoked the Ottoman Empire against Russia. Prut War (fought between the Ottoman Empire and Russia and the Ottoman Army defeated the Russians) was a result of his provocation. After Prut War, a peace treaty was signed between Russia and Ottoman Empire. Despite the treaty Charles continued to provoke the Ottomans. He was caught and imprisoned in Dimetoka. However, he managed to escape to Sweden. In Sweden he was killed (1718). |
