The last Caliph
Abdulmecid Efendi was born in Istanbul, in 1868. He is the son of Sultan Abdulaziz and
Hayrandil Hatun. Abdulmecid lived an isolated life during the sultanate of Abdulhamid and
he could not have a chance to have a proper education. He was very interested in fine arts
and he had very brilliant paintings. In the Second Constitutional Period he had several
exhibitions. As Sultan Vahiuddin acceded the throne, Abdulmecid was declared the crown
prince. With abolishment of the sultanate on 1st November 1922, Abdulmecid was
appointed as the Caliph by the Grand Turkish National Assembly. However, the Caliphate
institution was abolished to the structure of the Republic on 3rd March 1924,
and all the Ottoman Dynasty was exiled. Abdulmecid had died in Paris, in 1944, his bones
were transferred to Madine and buried in Haremi Serif in 1954. |
