Ali Rifat Cagatay was a famous composer, interpreter and a lecturer. He renovated the classical Turkish music with the western musical forms. He had learned to play lute, violoncello, and kemence (three stringed violin). In his young ages he won a fame as a lute player. He had founded different music societies and trained many students. He defined the future’s Turkish music in the western forms and he composed many works in this manner. Between 1924-30, the National March of Turkey had been sang with his composition. He died on 3rd March 1935, in Istanbul.
