Abdullah Cevdet Karlidag was born in 1869, in Istanbul. He was the son of Haci Omer Efendi the Commander of Arapkirli troops. He finished Elazig Military School and Kuleli Military Academy (1888-1894). In his school years he was interested in literature and with Abdulhak Hamid’s request he collected his poems. He used Omer Cevdet penname in his early works. He was a sympathiser of the Committee of Union and Progress. Under their influence he focused on the political problems. In 1895, he was arrested and appointed to Tripoli Hospital as the eye operator. However, he continued to work for the committee there, as well. As he understood he will be exiled to Fizan he escaped to Tunis and later to France (1897). Afterwards, he settled in Geneva where he joined the Ottoman Entente Party. He published “Osmanli Gazetesi” (the Ottoman Newspaper) with Ishak Suluhi. In Geneva, he published two poetry collections. He translated many works of Weber, Gustave Le Bon, and Hayyam into Turkish. He died in Istanbul, in 1932. |
