Algerian Ghazi Hasan Pasha was famous for his large-curved moustache. He was probably Caucasian originated. He was slaved as a child in the Iran border, and, was sold to a merchant called Haci Osman Aga from Tekirdag and he grown up together with the merchant’s sons. In the following years he was freed and he left Tekirdag. In 1738, when the Ottoman-Russia and Austria war was continuing, he joined Yeniceri Corps, and went wars. He proved his bravery and during the siege of Belgrade. In 1761 he joined the Ottoman Navy as a captain of galleon, and became a rear-admiral in 1762, vice-admiral in 1766. In 6 July 1770, Russia burned the Ottoman Navy in Dardanels and Hasan Pasha informed the Empire and he was promoted to be the Governor of Canakkale. Russia besieged the island of Limni and Hasan Pasha defended the island successfully. After this significant success he was designated to be the Minister of Navy. After the fell of Ozi Castle, his opponents propagandised against him and he was dismissed. Sultan Selim III appointed as the commander of Ismail Castle. Because of his successful administrations Sultan made him his grand vizier. Ghazi Hasan Pasha spent his life in battle fields and died in 30 March 1790 in Sumnu. He was faithful to his country, and very hardworking. He was man of his word. He spent most of his properties to the government’s expenses, and when he died he left few properties, than expected. |
