VAKAYI HAYRIYE (Pleasant Event)
.
Vaka-yi Hayriye is the abolition of the yeniceri corps by Sultan Mahmut II, in 1825. The Yeniceri Corps was established, in 1324. However, it lost its function starting from 1658 and become a residence of rebels. The yeniceris became so influential that, they begun to dethrone the sultans acting out of their benefits or they murdered the statesmen in their wills. The rebellious actions of the yeniceris disturbed the people. Their acts to damage the class of Islam scholars was the last drop and Sultan Mahmud II decided to abolish this rotten institution and he commanded for the establishment of a new army trained in European manners and this modern army was named as “eskinci”. The yeniceris rejected this modern education and they revolted. The Sultan took advantage of this revolt and declared a firman to abolish the corps. This event brought order to the country and it was called as the “pleasant event”.
