It is the movement targeting to unite the Slavs; in Central and Eastern Europe. The act of seeking a national identity for the Slavs firstly appeared among the intellectuals, scientists and the poets, in the first half of the nineteenth century. The first Panistlavists were aiming to provide a cultural union by researching the Slav folk songs, and poetry. Prague became the centre of panslavism as the cultural studies firstly held in this historic city. The first historical and philological studies were made in Prague. The panslavist movement gained a political identity in a short time. In 1848, while Austria-Hungary Empire had been struggling with many revolts, Frantisek Palacky a Czech historian, assembled a congress in Prague. All the representatives of the Slavs ruled by Austria-Hungary Empire joined to this congress. It was decided to end the central monarchy and to establish a federation under the domination of Habsburg Dynasty. In these federation, democracy and equal rights would have been primary administrative elements. This congress did not end with a very practical result, but panslavism became very influential especially in Russia, in 1860’s. |
